  • Global cases have surged past 10.4 million. The global death toll is over 508,000. The World Health Organization has warned the "worst is yet to come" given the lack of global solidarity.
  • Africa’s confirmed cases now number 382,354; are 9,668. Egypt and South Africa are two hotspots; Egypt has 65,188 cases, Nigeria 25,133 and Ghana 17,351. The WHO has warned that COVID-19 is disrupting vital health operations in Africa and that vaccination campaigns, HIV and malaria treatment programmes could be disrupted and wipe out decades of progress; it estimates that over $31bn will be needed in the next year to develop effective medicines to fight COVID-19.
  • SA has 144,264 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 2,529 deaths. This is an increase of 6,130 new cases; 70,614 people have recovered from the virus. The Western Cape has the highest number of confirmed cases at 61,375 (accounting for 43% of the total); 1,807 deaths have been reported. Gauteng has 39,841 cases (accounting for 28% of the total) and 180 deaths, while the Eastern Cape has 26,195 cases (accounting for 18% of the total) and 397 deaths. KwaZulu-Natal has 9,041 cases and 115 deaths. 1,596,995 tests have been conducted since 5 March; 29,911 were in the past 24 hours. President Cyril Ramaphosa commented yesterday that government will be deploying ministers and a deputy minister to each of the districts in the country in order to assess the specific challenges there.
