SA re-enters lockdown Level 4

Vaccine update:

  • Globally, over 2.92 billion doses have been administered across 180 countries at a rate of 44.2 million doses a day.
  • AstraZeneca has started trials of a new variant vaccine in both vaccinated and unvaccinated people. 
  • The study will recruit about 2,250 participants across the UK, SA, Brazil, and Poland and review the vaccine's safety and efficacy.
  • Hong Kong has suspended vaccinations as a black rainstorm hit the financial hub.
  • Indonesia’s vaccination rate reached 1.3 million doses a day after the government deployed the military and police to assist.
  • The US will provide Honduras with 1.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine through the COVAX facility.
  • The World Bank and the African Union have collaborated to purchase 400 million J&J vaccines for Africa. 
  • The World Bank will provide $12bn to finance the purchase and deployment of the vaccines.
  • Denmark has donated 358,000 AstraZeneca vaccines to Kenya to help shore up stocks for the second round of vaccinations.
  • Locally, 2.684 million vaccines have been administered to date.
  • Gauteng hopes to vaccinate more than 125,000 educators and school staff; the Western Cape aims to vaccinate 6,000 educators.
  • SA’s state-owned Biovac Institute is set to produce vaccines in the country to boost Africa’s vaccine supply. 
  • The WHO has noted that this will form part of a broader vaccine technology-transfer hub in the country. 

Global cases update:

  • Cases have surpassed 181.86 million, while the death toll has surpassed 3.93 million; recoveries are at 166.38 million.
  • The US has 34.49 million cases, accounting for 19% of global cases; the US death toll is 619,424. 
  • India has 30.27 million cases and 396,761 deaths; Brazil has 18.42 million cases and 513,544 deaths.
  • The UK’s new health secretary has indicated that his top priority is getting the country back to normal "as quickly as possible." 

Africa cases update:

  • Africa’s Covid-19 cases are at 5.46 million; fatalities are at 141,519.
  • Morocco has 529,676 reported cases, Nigeria 167,467, Ghana 95,369, Kenya 182,597.

 South Africa cases update:

  • SA currently has the 19th highest caseload, at 1.928 million; 15,036 new cases were reported yesterday.
  • Covid-19 deaths rose by 122 yesterday, to 59,900; 1.709 million people (or 88.7%) have recovered from the virus.
  • Provincial caseload: Gauteng 620,956 (accounting for 32,2% of the total); KwaZulu-Natal has 351,916 (18,2% of the total); Western Cape 318,490 (16,5% of the total).
  • Provincial deaths: Gauteng 12,601; Western Cape 12,272; KwaZulu-Natal 10,661.
  • 12.96 million tests have been conducted since 5 March 2020.
  • President Ramaphosa moved the country to adjusted lockdown Level 4 as of today until 11 July due to a resurgence in infections.
  • The president noted that infections are being driven by the Delta variant.
  • The president also noted that the measures are "designed to allow as much economic activity to continue as possible while containing the spread of the virus”.
  • Restrictions include limiting travel to and from Gauteng which accounts for more than two-thirds of new infections, banning social gatherings and alcohol sales, and closing schools.
  • Funerals have been restricted to a maximum of 50 people; new curfew hours have been extended from 9pm to 4am.
