African cases keep declining

Global cases update:

  • Cases have surpassed 505 million, while the death toll has breached 6.22 million; recoveries are at 457 million.
  • The US has 82.37 million cases, accounting for 17% of global cases; the US death toll is 1.01 million. 
  • India has 43.04 million cases and 521,996 deaths; Brazil has 30.26 million cases and 662,076 deaths.
  • Cases in Shanghai remained elevated despite lockdown measures to curb the spread of the virus.
  • Singapore is looking to remove all Covid-19 tests for fully-vaccinated visitors in the next few weeks.
  • The US will co-host the second global Covid-19 summit on 12 May to continue the international effort in the pandemic fight and advance global preparedness.
  • Globally, more than 11.5 billion vaccine doses have been administered across 184 countries at a rate of 14.5 million doses a day.

Africa cases update:

  • Africa’s Covid-19 cases are at 11.82 million; fatalities are at 253,428.
  • Morocco has 1.164 million reported cases, Nigeria 255,648, Ghana 161,101, Kenya 323,618.
  • The WHO has noted that Africa is experiencing its longest-running decline in Covid infections since the onset of the pandemic.
  • Weekly cases have fallen for the past 16 weeks, while deaths have dropped for the last 8 weeks.
  • The previous longest decline in infections was between 1 August and 10 October 2021.
  • No African country is currently witnessing a resurgence in infections. 

South Africa cases update:

  • SA currently has the 29th highest caseload, at 3.742 million; 877 new cases were reported yesterday.
  • Active cases are at 13,957; Gauteng leads the way, with 4,494 active cases, followed by Kwazulu-Natal with 4,268.
  • There were 34 Covid-19 deaths reported yesterday; 3 were reported in the past 24-48 hours; deaths are at 100,181.
  • 3.627 million people (or 96.9%) have recovered from the virus.
  • 24.198 million tests have been conducted since 5 March 2020; 9,149 tests were conducted yesterday; the SA positivity rate is 9.6%.
  • 34.366 million vaccines have been administered in SA to date; 3,490 vaccines were administered yesterday.
  • 17.696 million people, or 44.47% of the SA adult population, have been fully vaccinated.
