Global update:

  • Global cases have surpassed 35.39 million and the death toll 1.04 million; recoveries are at 26.62 million.
  • US cases have increased to 7.63 million, accounting for 22% of global cases; the death toll there is 214,611.
  • India has 6.62 million cases and 102,714 deaths.
  • Brazil reported 8,456 cases yesterday, the fewest since mid-May, compared to near 70,000 cases reported on 29 July. Brazil cases now stand at 4.91 million and deaths at 146,375.
  • Russia has 1.21 million confirmed cases and 21,358 deaths.
  • France plans to shut down bars in Paris; New York City is expected to close schools and non-essential businesses in nine hotspots. 
  • In the UK PM Boris Johnson has warned of a “very tough” winter ahead.

Africa update:

  • Africa’s COVID-19 cases remain relatively low, with confirmed cases at 1.51 million; fatalities are at 36,512.
  • Morocco has 133,272 reported cases.
  • Nigeria 59,345, Ghana has 46,829 and Kenya 39,427.

South Africa update:

  • SA reached 100,000 cases on 22 June (110 days), it took a further 14 days to reach 200,000, 9 days to reach 300,000, a further 8 days to reach 400,000, 9 days more to breach 500,000 and 20 days to reach 600,000. However, the daily rate of increase is now starting to ease.
  • SA currently has the 10th-highest number of COVID-19 cases globally, at 681,289 confirmed COVID-19 cases, an increase of 1,573 new cases.
  • COVID-19 deaths rose by 38 yesterday, to 16,976; 614,781 people have recovered from the virus, a recovery rate of 90%.
  • Gauteng has the highest number of confirmed cases at 220,910 (accounting for 32.4% of the total); 4,299 deaths have been reported. 
  • The Western Cape has 111,448 (accounting for 16.4% of the total) and 4,204 deaths, while KwaZulu-Natal has 119,608 (accounting for 17,6% of the total) and 2,743 deaths.
  • The Eastern Cape has 89,853 cases (accounting for 13.2% of the total) and 3,128 deaths.
  • 4.27 million tests have been conducted since 5 March; 18,113 were in the past 24 hours.
