Global update:

  • Global cases have surpassed 40.28 million while the death toll has surpassed 1.11 million; recoveries are at 30.11 million.
  • The US reported 5 consecutive days of 50,000 new cases per day, with cases increasing to 8.38 million, accounting for 21% of global cases; the death toll there is 224,730.
  • India has 7.55 million cases and 114,642 deaths; Brazil 5.23 million cases and 153,905 deaths; Russia 1.39 million cases and 24,187 deaths.
  • Italy's cases increased to a daily record yesterday; PM Giuseppe Conte has deployed targeted distance measures to avoid a hard lockdown. 
  • Europe faces tighter movement restrictions; London and Paris have now implemented new restrictions.
  • Eli Lilly & Co. has put its government-sponsored antibody test on hold due to potential safety concerns. J&J paused its one-shot vaccine trial after signs of an unexplained illness.
  • The pandemic has pushed between 88 million and 114 million people into extreme poverty, according to the World Bank.

Africa update:

  • Africa’s COVID-19 cases remain relatively low, with confirmed cases at 1.64 million; fatalities are at 39,749.
  • Morocco has 173,632 reported cases, Nigeria 61,440, Ghana 47,310 and Kenya 44,881.
  • The World Health Organisation noted that Africa faces "a pivotal moment" in its fight against the coronavirus; cases and deaths are on the rise after the easing of lockdowns and travel curbs.
  • There has been a 7% average increase in weekly Covid-19 cases across the continent and an 8% average increase in weekly deaths over the past month, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

South Africa update:

  • SA reached 100,000 cases on 22 June (110 days), it took a further 14 days to reach 200,000, 9 days to reach 300,000, a further 8 days to reach 400,000, 9 days more to breach 500,000, 20 days to reach 600,000. However, the daily rate of increase is now starting to ease.
  • SA currently has the 12th-highest number of COVID-19 cases globally, at 703,793 confirmed Covid-19 cases, an increase of 1,662 new cases.
  • Covid-19 deaths rose by 691 last week to 18,471; 634,543 people have recovered from the virus, a recovery rate of 90%.
  • Gauteng has the highest number of confirmed cases at 225,181 (accounting for 32% of the total); 4,618 deaths have been reported. 
  • The Western Cape has 114,407 (accounting for 16.3% of the total) and 4,280 deaths while KwaZulu-Natal has 121,344 (accounting for 17.2% of the total) and 3,176 deaths.
  • The Eastern Cape has 92,006 cases (accounting for 13.1% of the total) and 3,430 deaths.
  • 4.54 million tests have been conducted since 5 March; 21,337 were in the past 24 hours.
