Global update:
- Global cases have surpassed 29.18 million, while the death toll has surpassed 928,000; recoveries are at 21.0 million.
- US cases have increased to 6.70 million, accounting for 23% of global cases; the death toll is 198,520.
- India has 4.84 million cases and 79,754 deaths.
- Brazil’s cases are at 4.33 million and 131,663 deaths have been reported; Russia has 1.06 million confirmed cases and 18,578 deaths.
- Infections are increasing in France and Germany following a summer of lax containment measures.
- UK infections are rising across the country which threatens the fragile economic recovery; PM Boris Johnson has now introduced new social limitations and urged compliance to prevent the spread of the virus and avoid stricter measures being re-imposed.
- Pfizer has indicated the US would "likely" deploy a vaccine to the public by year-end. AstraZeneca and Oxford University have restarted a UK trial of their vaccine after the study was halted over concerns about a participant that had fallen ill.
Africa update:
- Confirmed cases in Africa are at 1.35 million; fatalities are at 32,625.
- Egypt has 101,009 reported cases, Nigeria 56,256, and Ghana 45,434.
- Kenya has 36,157.
South Africa update:
- SA reached 100,000 cases on 22 June (110 days), it took a further 14 days to reach 200,000, 9 days to reach 300,000, a further 8 days to reach 400,000, 9 days more to breach 500,000 and 20 days to reach 600,000. However, the daily rate of increase is now starting to ease.
- SA currently has the 8th-highest number of COVID-19 cases globally, at 649,793 confirmed cases, an increase of 1,579 new cases.
- COVID-19 deaths rose by 20 yesterday to 15,447; 577,906 people have recovered from the virus, a recovery rate of 88.9%.
- Gauteng has the highest number of confirmed cases at 215,140 (accounting for 33.1% of the total); 3,918 deaths have been reported.
- The Western Cape has 108,431 (accounting for 16.7% of the total) and 4,059 deaths, while KwaZulu-Natal has 116,389 (accounting for 17,9% of the total) and 2,407 deaths.
- The Eastern Cape has 87,415 cases (accounting for 13.5% of the total) and 3,047 deaths.
- 3.91 million tests have been conducted since 5 March; 15,692 were in the past 24 hours.
- According to hospital surveillance data from select hospitals, there are currently 5,248 hospitalisations (from 5,632 a week ago), 768 patients in ICU (from 872 a week ago), and 367 people are on ventilators (from 420 a week ago).
