Career Highlights

Penny Byrne joined the Standard Bank economics research team in 2015, then transferred to SBG Securities as ESG investment analyst in 2022. She holds an MSc in pure mathematics and a PhD in climate science, providing a solid foundation for interpreting the various environmental risks that are playing out as the global climate changes. Increasingly, local and international asset managers are adopting sustainability criteria in their investment selection processes. The SBG Securities ESG offering is designed to assist asset managers in understanding the different ESG risks companies are facing in a warming world (physical climate risks) that is expected to transition to a low-carbon economy (transition climate risks). These risks should be assessed, and understood, in terms of companies' ESG impact and how their strategies are being adjusted to have a positive global impact. Penny's PhD thesis examined factors that influence rainfall over southern Africa. This can be useful in assessing seasonal weather forecasts as well as the impact of global weather conditions on soft commodity prices, which in turn can impact macroeconomic factors such as inflation.
