SA moves to lockdown Level 1

Global update:

  • Global cases have surpassed 114.68 million, while the death toll has surpassed 2.54 million; recoveries are at 90.24 million.
  • The US has 29.25 million cases, accounting for 26% of global cases; the death toll is 525,776. 
  • India has 11.11 million cases and 157,195 deaths; Brazil 10.55 million cases and 255,018 deaths.
  • Italy is expected to tighten curbs in some cities to counter an acceleration of the virus caused by new variants.
  • Norway will close shops and restaurants in its capital Oslo to curb an acceleration of new cases. 
  • The single-dose J&J vaccine has been approved for use in adults in the US.
  • Infectious disease specialist Anthony Fauci has recommended getting a shot soonest and not shopping around for any individual brand. 
  • The Philippines has kicked off its vaccination programme with the Chinese Sinovac BioTech vaccine.
  • More than 241 million doses have been administered across 103 countries at an average rate of 6.73 million doses a day.

Africa update:

  • Africa’s Covid-19 cases are at 3.92 million; fatalities are at 103,868.
  • Morocco has 483,654 reported cases, Nigeria 155,657, Ghana 84,023, Kenya 105,973.
  • A survey on vaccine confidence in 15 African countries has found that there needs to be an improvement on communication around vaccine safety. The survey showed that many people still have concerns and doubts over efficacy. Country preparedness was also a key concern in the vaccine confidence survey.

South Africa update:

  • SA currently has the 16th highest caseload, at 1.513 million; 1,168 new cases were reported yesterday.
  • Covid-19 deaths rose by 52 yesterday, to 49,993; 1.43 million people (or 94,5%) have recovered from the virus.
  • Gauteng has the highest number of confirmed cases, at 404,639 (accounting for 26.7% of the total); 9,678 deaths have been reported. 
  • The Western Cape has 277,668 (accounting for 18.3% of the total) and 11,167 deaths, while KwaZulu-Natal has 329,163 (accounting for 21.8% of the total) and 9,610 deaths.
  • The Eastern Cape has 193,895 cases (accounting for 12,8% of the total) and 11,290 deaths.
  • 9.07 million tests have been conducted since 5 March; 22,836 tests were conducted yesterday.
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa moved SA from lockdown Level 3 to Level 1 last night as the rate of infection eases. He announced a change in curfew from midnight to 4am. Most limits on alcohol sales were scrapped, while larger public gatherings are now permitted.
  • 70,527 healthcare workers have been vaccinated to date.
  • The second phase of the vaccine roll-out is due to begin in April or early May; it will target the elderly and other vulnerable groups.
