The COVID-19 daily tracker is an easy guide to daily developments of this pandemic, globally and for Sub-Saharan Africa and South Africa specifically. The PDF (see link in email body, top right) contains a series of informative graphs. 

  • Global cases have surged past 10.81 million, while the death toll has surpassed 519,000. Recoveries from the virus have increased to 5.79 million. US cases have increased to 2.77 million, accounting for 26% of global cases; the death toll is 130,798. California banned dining-in in 19 counties including Los Angeles after a record day of new infections. Arizona too had record cases reported yesterday. Houston hospitals saw ICU patients reach 102% of capacity, while the death rate in Texas has surged. Brazil has 1.45 million cases and 60,713 deaths; Russia has 654,405 cases and 9,536 deaths; India has 605,220 cases and 17,848 deaths.
  • Africa’s confirmed cases now number 417,710; fatalities are 10,371. Egypt has 69,814 reported cases, Nigeria 26,484 and Ghana 18,134.
  • SA now has 159,333 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 2,749 deaths. This is an increase of 8,124 new cases – the highest daily increase on record; 76,025 people have recovered from the virus. The Western Cape has the highest number of confirmed cases at 64,377 (accounting for 40% of the total); 1,896 deaths have been reported. Gauteng has 45,944 cases (accounting for 29% of the total) and 244 deaths, while the Eastern Cape has 29,340 cases (accounting for 18% of the total) and 439 deaths. KwaZulu-Natal has 10,632 cases and 136 deaths. 1,666,939 tests have been conducted since 5 March; 36,931 were in the past 24 hours.
