Vaccination drives in Africa still lagging

Shireen Darmalingam

Vaccine update:

  • More than 1.29 billion doses have been administered across 174 countries at a rate of 20.8 million doses a day.
  • The European Medicines Agency has begun a review of a treatment for people who have been infected with the virus. The treatment has proved to be 95% effective at reducing hospitalisations or deaths in initial clinical trials. The review will assess the safety and quality in adults and people over 12 who do not require oxygen and who are at risk of progressing to severe disease.
  • The EU has not renewed its contract for AstraZeneca vaccines.
  • Given health concerns, the UK will offer an alternative vaccine to the AstraZeneca shot to those under 40. England is on track to ease some restrictions from 17 May as the infection rate there reaches its lowest since September 2020.
  • Brazil is expected to begin administering the Pfizer vaccine soon.
  • African Union officials are hopeful that at least three countries, SA, Senegal and Rwanda, will be able develop the capacity to produce vaccines for the continent.
  • Health officials aim to vaccinate at least 30% of the 1.2bn population by the end of the year, rising to 60% or more after that.
  • However, the continent continues to face supply constraints, logistical problems, and vaccine hesitancy.
  • In SA, 382,480 vaccinations have been administered to date.

Cases update: global

  • Cases have surpassed 158.97 million, while the death toll has surpassed 3.3 million; recoveries are at 136.51 million.
  • The US has 33.47 million cases, accounting for 21% of global cases; the US death toll is 595,812.
  • India has 22.66 million cases and 246,16 deaths; Brazil has 15.18 million cases and 422,418 deaths.
  • New Delhi has extended its lockdown restrictions for another week.
  • Infectious disease specialist Anthony Fauci has indicated that Covid deaths in the US may have been under-counted. A US academic study has found that the global death toll could be more than double the official number recorded. This comes as mortality figures are “significantly under-reported” in almost every country. The study estimates that around 6.9m people may have lost their lives to the virus.
